  • PhD degree in biology, neurobiology, pharmacology, or related life sciences; additional academic titles or honors (e.g., honorary professor, visiting professor) are welcome.

  • Minimum of 15 years of experience leading research teams, including at least 5 years in senior management roles within major scientific or industrial institutions (e.g., global pharmaceutical companies, research institutes).

  • Proven scientific achievements, with at least 100 publications in JCR-listed journals, a total H-index ≥ 40, and at least 10,000 citations.

  • Experience in conducting international research programs funded by the EU, IHI/IMI, NIH, or other international agencies, including managing large scientific consortia (minimum 3 partner countries).

  • Documented collaboration with the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, including developing research strategies, scientific partnerships, and commercialization of research results.

  • Ability to strategically plan the development of a research center, including building a project portfolio, securing external funding, and managing personnel with diverse scientific backgrounds.

  • Teaching and mentoring experience at the university level (lectures, PhD supervision).

  • Proficiency in English (C1/C2 level).

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills enabling the creation of integrated multidisciplinary teams and collaboration with both public and private partners.

PREFERRED ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in creating or restructuring research units (e.g., centers of excellence, translational laboratories, R&D departments).

  • Knowledge of modern methods in brain imaging, behavioral modeling, big data analysis, and artificial intelligence in biomedical research.

  • Understanding of ethical and regulatory principles governing preclinical and clinical research.

  • Participation in scientific boards, advisory committees, or strategic panels at the international level.

MINIMUM OPERATIONAL EXPECTATIONS:

  • Presentation of a development vision for the Center of Excellence, including cooperation with universities, industry, and international partners.

  • Availability to serve as Director for a minimum term of 5 years.

Building the Center of Excellence

  • Active involvement in the creation and scientific development of the Center, including integration of existing research groups on campus through mentoring and support for young researchers, promoting synergy, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.

  • Acting as a leader in shaping research policy to foster partnerships with the pharmaceutical sector.

  • Implementing and monitoring quality standards (ISO, GLP, GMP).

  • Defining and executing strategies to transition from basic through translational to clinical and applied research, including establishing and meeting joint performance indicators (KPIs).

  • Introducing mechanisms to strengthen application-oriented competencies in proof-of-concept, technology validation, and development of demonstrators and prototypes.

Securing External Funding

  • Attracting competitive research grants and contracts.

  • Ensuring the Center operates as a financially self-sustaining unit, covering research, personnel, and operational costs.

  • Efficient utilization of the Institute’s infrastructure (laboratories, administrative resources) and contributing to its maintenance, including personnel and advanced research equipment.

Building International Networks

  • Strengthening internal collaboration (Łukasiewicz Research Network, WrocBiotechHub) and developing international partnerships in Europe and worldwide.

  • Establishing long-term collaborations with universities, hospitals, and industry to enhance the Center’s visibility and impact.

Institutional Transformation

  • Acting not only within one’s own research scope but also to raise the overall quality of life sciences research.

  • Co-developing a long-term (5–10 years) scientific and financial strategy for the institution, setting research priorities aligned with the Institute’s mission and the expectations of the Łukasiewicz Network.

  • Ensuring global recognition and visibility of both the Center and the Institute.

Sustainable Development and Long-Term Operations

  • Ensuring the Center’s financial continuity, human resources, and infrastructure after the completion of grant funding.

  • Establishing a management model involving the Institute’s leadership, regional authorities, and other stakeholders.

  • Initiating strategic partnerships with industry, clinical institutions, and public organizations.
