Łukasiewicz Research Network and Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe sp. z o.o. have signed a cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening Poland’s energy security. The interdisciplinary expertise of the Network’s 22 research and implementation institutes is expected to support, among other initiatives, the implementation of the government’s Polish Nuclear Power Programme.

Łukasiewicz staff will support the state-owned company responsible, among other things, for the plan to build nuclear power plants based on the American AP1000 technology. Their total electrical capacity is expected to range from 6 to 9 GWe, with the first plant, with a capacity of 3.75 GWe, to be built in Pomerania.

Łukasiewicz Research Network has domestic technologies that provide comprehensive support for the development of nuclear energy. Areas of particular importance for Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe include specialised solutions for energy infrastructure, increasing the durability of operating materials, and welding methods compliant with international standards for the nuclear energy sector. Łukasiewicz engineers will also work, among other things, to strengthen the resistance of concrete to water exposure in channels used to cool reactors.

“The agreement we have signed gives Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe real access to the competences of Polish research institutes, which will support us in very specific areas — from materials testing and construction technologies, through certification and workforce development, to security and supply chain organisation. These are elements that are important for the efficient and safe implementation of the nuclear power plant project in Pomerania, and at the same time another important step towards increasing the participation of Polish industry in this undertaking,” said Marek Woszczyk, President of the Management Board of Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe.

Energy transition is one of the four directions of Łukasiewicz Research Network set out in the Network Strategy. This task is supported, among other initiatives, by the cooperation launched in October 2025 between the Network and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. It enables Polish researchers and engineers to take part in study visits to EU centres in order to develop competences in the field of nuclear energy. The first such visits have already taken place.

“Poland’s security, including energy security, is today one of the most important challenges to which the potential and experience of the seven thousand employees of the Network’s institutes can respond. We are consistently moving in this direction,” said Dr Hubert Cichocki, President of the Łukasiewicz Centre. “The essence of the Network’s activities is cooperation with leading and most innovative enterprises. I am pleased that, in carrying out tasks of national importance, we have partners such as Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe,” added the President of Łukasiewicz.
