The energy transformation in Poland is becoming an increasingly important topic in the context of rising electricity prices and the declining competitiveness of Polish industry. Moving away from emission-intensive forms of electricity generation in favor of cheaper alternatives is becoming essential. These issues were discussed by participants of the conference “From Coal to Atom. The Future of Bełchatów,” attended by Hubert Cichocki, CEO of the Łukasiewicz Research Network.

The event focused on the transformation of the region and key aspects of Poland’s energy transition. The conference brought together representatives from academic communities, members of parliament, local government authorities, and experts from the power industry.

During thematic panels, participants discussed topics related to the construction of a nuclear power plant in Bełchatów, as well as the challenges and opportunities arising from this investment.

Hubert Cichocki, CEO of the Łukasiewicz Research Network, took part in the keynote panel: “Can Polish Energy Cope Without Nuclear? Opportunities and Threats Related to the Development of Nuclear Energy in Poland.”

“Wholesale electricity prices in Poland are higher than in the United States. Therefore, the energy transformation is not only an opportunity for our economy but also a necessity for the domestic business sector and its competitiveness, especially in industries where energy prices constitute a significant part of the cost structure,” emphasized Hubert Cichocki.

“We would like the Łukasiewicz Research Network to become a provider of solutions supporting the energy transformation – including in the area of nuclear technologies,” added the CEO.

Panelists also addressed the role of nuclear energy in stabilizing the power system, the safety of next-generation reactors, the benefits and challenges associated with building Poland’s first nuclear power plants, and the impact of nuclear energy on achieving climate goals.
