Rolling stock that can withstand the weight of any NATO tank

A carriage for a wagon that will lift oversized loads has been designed by engineers from Lukasiewicz – Poznan Institute of Technology. This is in response to market needs reported for several years, both by the defense industry and the civilian sector, for the safe transportation of extremely heavy equipment by rail. The project is ready for implementation and will enable the transport of tanks, combat vehicles, energy storage or large-scale industrial machinery, among others.

The transportation of oversized cargo by rail has been a challenge for years, especially for industries needing to transport heavy equipment. Since 2023, the Łukasiewicz-Poznan Institute of Technology has been working on a three-axle bogie that can be used in any freight car with military transport in mind. The project, funded by a state subsidy, ended with the development of a solution ready for commercialization, primarily by Polish rolling stock manufacturers.

How do you haul Abrams tanks that weigh more than 60 tons?

The bogies, or running gears, on which the bodies of wagons, locomotives or platforms are seated, normally consist of two wheelsets. The load per wheelset currently in Poland is a maximum of 22.5 tons.

Researchers from Lukasiewicz – PIT have constructed a special carriage that consists of three axles. When used in a dedicated carriage, it will allow the transportation of any tank at NATO’s disposal.

– Railroads play a leading role in the transportation of military equipment, as they are best suited to carry very heavy and large loads. The current geopolitical situation is forcing us to prepare for such transports,” explains Tomasz Antkowiak of Lukasiewicz – PIT, who, together with his team, constructed the cart.

Designed by Poznan researchers, the cart has a lightweight but sturdy design. Its advantages are simplicity of construction and full readiness for deployment. The institute is currently looking for business partners, both in the defense and civilian sectors.

A solution not only for the military

The 37TN cart will also prove useful in civilian transports, that is, wherever oversized cargo needs to be transported. With the right wagon design and using the 37TN cart, it will be possible to transport special machinery, long-haul cargo in the form of rails, bales of wood or energy storage.

– Currently, none of the Polish manufacturers produce six-axle wagons, much less three-axle bogies. There is a shortage of wagons in Poland that can be used to transport really heavy goods. The advantage of our cart is that its use is not exclusively military, and it can be used for civilian transportation. It will benefit Polish industry, which will be able to compete with Western manufacturers,” adds Tomasz Antkowiak.

The designed 37TN bogie can reach a maximum speed of 100 km/h (120 km/h in vacuum). It meets the requirements of the latest Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI scales). The developed construction and maintenance documentation allows the start of immediate production.

A wagon carriage that will lift oversized loads has been designed by engineers from Lukasiewicz – Poznan Institute of Technology.
